What is a Dental Crown?
Also known as a cap, a dental crown is a customized tooth restoration placed over your damaged or impaired teeth to restore their shape, size, and functionality. Crowns encase a cracked or broken tooth, protecting the underlying dentine, nerves, tissues, and blood vessels. Since they cover the entire tooth, our Antioch dental crowns strengthen tooth structure, restore function, and improve aesthetics.
Types of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a permanent tooth restoration solution, and they come in a wide range of materials, including:
Metal: Metal crowns are usually made from gold, nickel, palladium, and chromium. Metallic crowns are durable, conserve most of your tooth, and are ideal for out-of-sight molars.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These crowns are hardly noticeable because they’re matched to the color of the neighboring teeth. They aren’t as durable as metallic crowns, and sometimes, the metal beneath the porcelain cap is visible as a dark line.
All-resin: Resin dental crowns are the most affordable, but they are more susceptible to chipping and breaking than the rest.
All-porcelain: Ceramic crowns have exceptional color matching capabilities and are ideal for people with metal allergies. There are durable and often used to restore the front teeth.
Pressed ceramic: Pressed ceramic dental crowns use a hard inner core to replace the metal liner used in all-ceramic crowns. Since they’re capped with porcelain, pressed ceramic crowns have a superior color match. They are more durable than all-porcelain crowns.
Our practice offers several different materials to choose from depending on your situation. We'll examine the condition and location of the tooth and consult with you on your preferences, lifestyle, and budget to provide the recommendation that best meets your needs.
When Do You Need a Dental Crown?
Crowns are versatile dental treatments that restore functionality in impaired teeth while improving their aesthetics. Dental crowns also address other dental issues, including:
- Protecting weak teeth from further damage
- Restoring functionality in severely worn, damaged, or broken teeth
- Supporting dental bridges
- Reshaping severely misshapen or discolored teeth
- Covering a tooth with a large filling and an extensively worn natural crown
- Completing dental implants following teeth replacement
- Covering a tooth after a successful root canal treatment
- Enhancing a tooth's aesthetic appeal
Our Dental Crown Treatment Process
Since dental crowns are permanent tooth restoration treatment procedures, we take every precaution to ensure each procedure is a success. A typical Antioch dental crown treatment takes two dental visits.
First Visit
Our skilled dental team will examine your teeth during your first visit and determine if you’re a good candidate for a crown. We use innovative dental technology to take images of your tooth, jaw bone, and surrounding teeth.
If the primary diagnosis reveals tooth decay, pulp injury, or a risk of infection, we may perform a root canal treatment. We can refer you to a trusted endodontist down the street who will alleviate infection and save your tooth. In most cases, they will attend to your tooth immediately without setting another appointment. After the root canal therapy, we can carry on with the tooth restoration.
Before placing a crown, we need to contour the tooth across the sides and the top to make space for the crown to fit naturally within your smile. If tooth decay or an injury has eroded much of your teeth, we may use filling material to recreate your tooth structure.
After reshaping the tooth, we make an impression of the tooth receiving the crown. We also make impressions of the teeth below or above the tooth receiving a crown. Our impressions are precise to ensure the new crown fits seamlessly and doesn’t alter your bite. It also lowers the chances of the new crown wearing down the opposite tooth. We cover the treated tooth with a temporary crown while awaiting the permanent crown.
We send the impressions to a professional dental laboratory, where the experts use them to create customized crowns. Our lab partners are highly efficient, and your custom crown is typically delivered within two weeks.
The Second Visit
During your second dental appointment, our skilled dentist will fix the permanent crown on your tooth. First, we remove the temporary crown and check the fit and the color. We may use local anesthetic to numb the tooth as we cement the new crown in place for a smooth, comfortable experience.
Caring for Your Dental Crowns
On average, our Antioch dental crowns have a lifespan of 5-15 years. However, the lifespan depends on your oral hygiene practices, wear and tear, and personal mouth-related habits. Clenching, grinding, nail-biting, and chewing ice can damage and wear down dental crowns. Practicing good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day will ensure your dental crowns last longer. Wear a mouth guard if you participate in contact sports and never use your teeth to open packages.
